What Causes Dock Seal Fires?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires trailers to have rear identification lamps.

These ordinary lamps, in open air, do not generate significant heat, but when backed into a compression-style foam dock seals, temperatures can rise up to 900 degrees F in as little as 20 minutes.

Highly flammable dock seal materials can smolder and burn, and eventually erupt into flames, especially upon the intake of oxygen as the trailer leaves the dock.

Simple fire retardant materials cannot prevent this burning.

This video clip shows Frommelt testing footage demonstrating how the heat of a standard trailer marker light, after being compressed into a foam dock seal for as little as 20 to 30 minutes, can cause smoldering and auto-ignition of the dock seal.
